South Africa has never had more choice when it comes to ready-to-drink beverages. Craft beer continues to flourish, premium ciders remain a staple, canned cocktails have found their audience, and hard seltzers have carved out a niche of their own. Now, another category is quietly finding its place in the cooler box. Hard soda.
Already well established overseas, hard soda blends the familiar flavours of soft drinks with premium spirits, creating something that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly modern. It’s a category that isn’t trying to replace beer or cider, but instead offers an entirely different drinking experience. One that’s lighter, fruit-forward and perfectly suited to the way many South Africans now enjoy social occasions.

South Side Hard Soda is one of the first local brands to fully embrace that concept. Made with premium vodka, sparkling spring water and real fruit flavours, it also boasts just 72 calories, 3g of sugar per can and a gluten-free recipe. Those credentials are likely to appeal to consumers looking for a lighter alternative without sacrificing flavour, but numbers only tell part of the story.
The real question is simple.
Does it actually taste good?
First impressions
Before even cracking open the first can, South Side immediately feels different to many traditional RTDs. The branding is clean and contemporary, avoiding the loud, overly colourful aesthetic that often dominates the category. Instead, it gives off a premium feel that wouldn’t look out of place at a rooftop sundowner, around a braai or packed into a cooler for a weekend away.
Pouring the drinks over ice reveals a light sparkle with none of the syrupy appearance associated with sweeter spirit coolers. Even before the first sip, the aromas suggest fresh fruit rather than artificial sweetness, setting expectations that the flavour profile will be more restrained than many consumers might anticipate.

Why hard soda makes sense right now
Consumer drinking habits have evolved considerably over the past few years. More people are looking for beverages that feel refreshing without being heavy, sweet without becoming sickly and flavourful without masking the alcohol beneath excessive sugar.
That’s exactly where hard soda fits.
Perhaps even more interesting is the emotional connection the category creates. Familiar fruit flavours instantly evoke memories of childhood soft drinks, summer holidays and long afternoons spent outdoors. South Side cleverly taps into that nostalgia, then gives those recognisable flavours a distinctly adult finish through a smooth vodka base and crisp carbonation.
It’s familiar enough to feel comforting, yet different enough to feel like something entirely new.

The taste test
Cranberry & Raspberry
This was the flavour I was most curious about, and it quickly became one of the standout cans in the range.
The cranberry arrives first with a pleasant tartness that immediately keeps the drink lively, while the raspberry follows with just enough sweetness to soften the edges without ever taking over. It’s a well-balanced combination that never becomes overly fruity or artificial.
What impressed me most was how clean the finish remained. Many fruit-based RTDs become increasingly sweet as you work through the can, but South Side maintains its freshness throughout. The vodka stays subtle, allowing the fruit to lead without ever reminding you you’re drinking an alcoholic beverage.
It’s crisp, refreshing and incredibly easy to drink.
If you usually gravitate towards cider or lighter rosé wines, this flavour will probably feel immediately familiar.
Passion Fruit
If Cranberry & Raspberry feels elegant, Passion Fruit is unapologetically fun.
Bright tropical aromas leap out of the can, followed by a burst of ripe passion fruit that immediately feels like summer. Despite the naturally sweet flavour profile of passion fruit, South Side manages to keep everything remarkably balanced.
The carbonation plays an important role here. Rather than overwhelming the palate, it lifts the fruit flavours and leaves a clean, refreshing finish that encourages another sip.
Served ice cold, this is the flavour I can easily imagine becoming a favourite for pool days, beach weekends, golf afternoons or relaxed braais with friends.
It’s approachable, refreshing and likely to appeal to a broad audience.
What stood out most
More than any individual flavour, what impressed me was the restraint.
Too many ready-to-drink beverages rely on excessive sweetness to disguise the alcohol. South Side takes the opposite approach. The fruit tastes authentic, the vodka remains smooth and understated, and the sparkling finish prevents the drinks from ever feeling heavy.
That balance gives the range a premium feel and makes it surprisingly sessionable.
If there’s one observation to make, it’s that drinkers who enjoy particularly sweet spirit coolers may initially find South Side lighter than expected. Personally, I saw that as a strength rather than a weakness, but it’s worth noting that these drinks prioritise freshness over sweetness.
Who is South Side for?
South Side isn’t trying to compete with a craft IPA or a premium whisky.
Instead, it fills a space that has been surprisingly underserved in South Africa.
It’s for people who enjoy crisp, fruit-forward drinks without excessive sugar. It’s for those looking for an alternative to cider. It’s for consumers who want something easy to drink at a braai, music festival, picnic, golf day or sunset gathering without feeling weighed down after one or two cans.
It also feels perfectly suited to a younger generation of drinkers who increasingly value lighter beverages, cleaner ingredient lists and drinks that fit naturally into an active, outdoor lifestyle.

So, Is It Worth Trying?
South Side Hard Soda feels like more than simply another ready-to-drink launch. It feels like the beginning of a category that’s ready to gain momentum in South Africa.
The brand successfully combines familiar fruit flavours with a cleaner, more contemporary drinking experience, creating something that feels nostalgic without becoming gimmicky. Every flavour I tried delivered on refreshment, while the lower sugar content and restrained sweetness helped distinguish it from many of the traditional RTDs currently on the market.
Would I buy it again?
Absolutely.
It’s refreshing, well balanced and genuinely enjoyable to drink. More importantly, it offers something different in a category where many products often taste remarkably similar.
If you’re curious about hard soda or simply looking for a lighter alternative to your usual beer, cider or spirit cooler, South Side is well worth adding to your next cooler box.

South Side Hard Soda proves that sometimes the best innovations don’t reinvent the wheel. They simply take something familiar and make it better.
